Surry Hills LAC - NSW Police Force

A safe and secure NSW. We encourage contributions to this page, but please do NOT report crime here.

The Surry Hills Local Area Command (LAC) is part of the Central Metropolitan Region and is located south-east of the Sydney City Business District (CBD), nestled between Kings Cross and Redfern. At just 4.013 square kilometres in area, it is one of the smallest LACs, however what it lacks in size it makes up for with its unique character.

The LAC falls predominantly within the City of Sydney Council precinct and includes the suburbs of Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington, Centennial Park and Moore Park. The LAC is densely populated and attracts a constant transient population for the many sporting and cultural events or to attend the many nightclubs, licensed premises, cafés and restaurants along the infamous Oxford Street entertainment strip. The Oxford Street perimeter runs 2½ kilometres between the intersection of College Street and Wentworth Avenue at Darlinghurst to the intersection of Queen Street and Lang Road at Paddington, and hosts the majority of reported crime incidents and police responses from the LAC. Surry Hills houses approximately 20,000 residents, ranging from a growing number of affluent young professionals through to the lower economic strata of the large public housing accommodation to homeless and drug dependant persons.

There are at least ten welfare institutions and rehabilitation centres in Surry Hills LAC to accommodate people experiencing various hardships, namely homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse as well as those released from the custody of Corrective Services. Surry Hills is also frequented by a large Gay and Lesbian community. The annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is a major annual event within the LAC that occurs predominantly along Oxford Street to Fox Studios. This international event attracts thousands of people to the area to watch the procession of floats and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Surry Hills LAC can be defined as equally shared between parkland and residential precincts, with some small industrial factories, warehouses and commercial locales with retail facilities lining Oxford St. Also within the LAC are the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) and the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which host major sporting events and concerts throughout the year.
